He is also expert in carrying out import and export operations with standard knowledge of the government policies, regulations and EXIM policies. Very recently Mr. Dev Banerjee gave an exclusive interview with REFLECTIONNEWS. In the interview he narrated an overview of Emirate Cement (BD) activities, market scenario, prospects and problems of cement sector in Bangladesh and so on. Mahmudul Hoque Dulal, Editor of REFLECTIONNEWS took the interview and the excerpts of it are as follows:

REFLECTION NEWS: As we know Emirates Cement (BD) Ltd. is one of the leading manufacturers of cement in the world as well as in Bangladesh, how do you evaluate the present market scenario of your products? Would you tell us about the background of your company and which point of view did prompt you to initiate your business in this country?

Dev Banerjee: Cement is an integral part of the Aditya Birla Group’s business and a clear focus area. Our Group is one of the largest cement producers in the world with 52 million tons capacity with 12 integrated plants, 15 grinding units and 6 bulk terminals. The group is also leading player in RMC business with more than 101 plants. The annual turnover of the Group exceeds 35 billion USD.

The positive belief that quality begets quality has been the cornerstone of the progress of Aditya Birla Group cement business. The quality attributes are attained and maintained through the rigorous application of advanced technology. Needless to say, the process parameters are monitored and controlled and after taking over the cement grinding plant at Mukhtapur (near Dhaka), the production systems, quality assurance and logistics support have been upgraded by the Aditya Birla Group to ensure timely supply of fresh cement of very high consistent quality to our esteemed customers. It is our endeavor to excel in every field of cement business including servicing the consumers with highest quality of Technical Support before and after the cement supplies.

We wish to assure you that consistent quality products confirming to International Standards and supported with best possible services are now being provided by “UltraTech Cement”.  It is the beginning of our relationship and we are confident that it would grow into very strong bond during the years to come.

REFLECTIONNEWS: There are many (including local companies) cement manufacturing companies in Bangladesh and in this context do you face any tough competition among your-self? Please comment regarding this.

Dev Banerjee: We are an established business house well versed with the nature of complexities. We have come to this country with good knowledge of the topography & usage pattern. Our main focus will be to deliver superior value for the stakeholder & very special product to the customer best suited in line with the soil chemistry of this country. Though we respect competition, but we are not too much concerned as we are more versatile & flexible with knowledge/ expertise.

REFLECTIONNEWS: Do you think a congenial atmosphere is being prevailed to operate business smoothly here in Bangladesh? What sorts of impediments do you face in carrying out your business activities?

Dev Banerjee: Bangladesh is a beautiful country with immense infrastructure growth prospects. Apart it is a very labour intensive country. Certain stringent Govt. policies restrict inflow of FDI to the desired level.

04. Do you have any plan to introduce new technology or services in days to come for your valued clients?

REFLECTIONNEWS: We have already in the process of introducing new technologies in manufacturing unit situated at Mukhterpur.  This has directly resulted in creating our brand “Ultratech” as one of the best in this country. Various reputed testing houses of Bangladesh endorse this view like BUET, KUET, RUET, PWD, LGED’s etc.

Dev Banerjee: Customer to us is treated like God & we always cherish their feedback. We build on our weaknesses & move ahead aggressively on our strengths.

REFLECTIONNEWS: As an experienced personality in this sector how do you see the prospects of the most important components of construction industry like cement in the country?

Dev Banerjee: Bangladesh is the country of this decade. High rate of infrastructural growth is expected to happen till 2020 & further. Significant CAGR of 9.6% in the last 5 years has motivated many players to increase their capacities.

We also endorse this view & expect very high rate of growth in cement consumption. The GDP forecast of 7% growth will further give impetus to this industry with increased construction activity, mainly in infrastructure, housing & SME’s. We are experiencing increase in group housing concepts at satellite towns, we are seeing increased activity in road connectivity with connecting bridges on small/medium rivers, improvement /new marketing complexes are now being constructed in medium class cities, etc. Good agricultural produce is also helping in increased power of expenditure on basic needs like housing.

REFLECTION NEWS: What contribution have you made so far under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)?

Dev Banerjee: We are highly concerned with the welfare of the community. We have installed 20 nos dust collectors to minimize pollution along with a drive for green plantation within the premises of our plant. We are actively involved in improving the basic amenities of the locality including roads, madrasas, police outpost, masjid, etc.

REFLECTION NEWS: Would you tell us about future business expansion plan of your organization?

Dev Banerjee: We are an expanding group with Cement as core business, therefore will definitely plan to be a long time player in this country.
