DHAKA: Today is Victory Day. The country will observe the day with due solemnity and remember those who laid down their lives to liberate the country.
President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Begum Rowshan Ershad in separate messages congratulated the nation on the occasion.
Elaborate programs have been chalked out to mark the day.
The day will commence with a 31-gun salute and includes raising the national flag on top of all national institutions and wreaths giving at the National Memorial Monument at Savar.
Besides, special prayers will be held across the country for the salvation of the souls of the martyrs of the Liberation War.
The wreaths giving ceremony will start at 6:34 am at the National Memorial Monument at Savar and will continue throughout the day.
Wreaths giving at the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu’s portrait at Road 32, Dhanmandi will start at 8 am. At 10 am wreaths will be placed at Bangabandhu’s Grave at Tungipara, Gopalganj.
Before noon all leaders and workers of the Awami League including MPs will go to their respective areas and organize victory rallies and assemble at the spot where the Pakistan army surrendered.
In Dhaka, they will assemble at the Eternal Flame at Suhrawardy Udyan at 4:20 pm when the Pakistan army surrendered to the Mitra Bahini in 1971.
Later the assembled people will go to Road 32, Dhanmandi from the Suhrawardy Udyan.
On December 17, a meeting will be held at the Krishibid Institution auditorium where Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina will be the chief guest.
