DHAKA, Dec 13, 2014 : Veteran journalist and columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury yesterday said there is no alternative to extending support to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as her government has been working relentlessly to uproot militancy, terrorism and communalism from the country.

“I want to witness my 81st birthday to have a militancy-terrorism free Bangladesh. It would be one of my major expectations and gift of the day. I will extend my whole hearted support to Sheikh Hasina’s government till last breath of my life,” he told a civic reception accorded to him on his birthday in the city.

National Reception Committee organized the 80th birthday celebration function at Bangla Academy with Emeritus Professor Rafiqul Islam in the chair.

“I expect that militancy-communalism will be uprooted from the country forever. Alternative way to the path of Sheikh Hasina’s government pursues meant to transform Bangladesh into states like Afghanistan and Iraq,” he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana conveyed greetings to Gaffar Chowdhury on his birthday and wished him a long life.

The birthday celebration programme was also addressed, among others, by noted poet Syed Shamsul Haque, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, renowned journalist Abed Khan and aspirant candidate for member of parliament of Conservative Party of the United Kingdom Mina Rahman.

Earlier, Military Secretary to the Prime Minister on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana greeted Gaffar Chowdhury with bouquets of flower.

Political Advisor to the Prime Minister HT Imam, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, ex-foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni, artist Hashem Khan and Imran H Sarkar of Gonojagaran Manch along with many personalities greeted Gaffar Chowdhury.
