Staff Correspondent: Speakers at a programme on Sunday demanded that the government implement district budget immediately to expedite development in the tiers of local government.
A quick implementation of the budgetary allocation for the local governments will add a unique dimension to the decentralization of power, they said.
The demand came at a press conference titled “The Third budget of the government and local government”.
Governance Advocacy Forum — a platform of thirty-five national and international organizations — held the programme at the National Press Club in the city.
“Even the finance minister didn’t make pledges for the local government in the budget of 2011-12 fiscal year, which he made in the previous two budgets,” the speakers said.
In his address, Professor MM Akash of Economics Department, Dhaka University, said the budget for the local government is so insufficient that it is less than 1 percent of the total budget.
Among others, Harun-or-Rashid Hawlader, president of Bangladesh Upozilla Parishad Association, M Motasim Billah, vice-president of Municipal Association of Bangladesh, Noman Ahmed Khan, executive director of IID, and PRIP Trust’s Coordinator Shefali Begum were present at the press conference.
