DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday laid the foundation of 3rd Shitalakhya Bridge and Bhulta Flyover, two major infrastructure to connect the port city Narayanganj with the capital.
The Prime Minister laid the foundation of the bridge and flyover from her Gonobhaban residence through a video conference with Communications Minister Obaidul Qader at Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) office.
Addressing a function on the occasion the Prime Minister hoped that the bridge and flyover will help Narayanganj regaining its past glory as one of the country’s important business hub.
The projects would be epoch making steps for better connectivity between Dhaka and Narayanganj as well as development of the surrounding areas and economic condition of the people, she said.
Sheikh Hasina pointed out that the projects were taken by her government for development of road and rail communication saying many flyovers and metro-rail will free the capital from nagging traffic congestion.
Local parliament members, Charge-de-affairs of Saudi embassy in Dhaka and leaders of Narayanganj chamber and political parties also spoke on the occasion.
Over 1.2 kilometre long Shitalakhya Bridge will be constructed with the financial support of Saudi Arabia at Madanganj point of Syedpur-Bandar Upazila at a cost of Taka 377.63 crore. An approach road of 2.13 kilometre will also be constructed under the project which is scheduled to complete by June 2018.
The Bhulta Flyover will be constructed on Dhaka-Sylhet Highways at a cost of Taka 239.77 crore with the fund of the government.
The Prime Minister said the ongoing anarchy is destroying the country’s image abroad and taking toll on development. She sought cooperation of the conscious people to resist the terrorist activities.
