DHAKA: Last phase of the Union Parishad (UP) polls in 710 unions across the country will be held today amid tight security.
“Stage is set for holding the sixth and last phase of polls in 710 unions tomorrow in the ninth UP elections across the country amid adequate security measures,” public relations officer (PRO) of Election Commission (EC) S M Asaduzzaman told BSS today.
He said around 33,000 candidates, including the contesters for the post of union council chairmen and general and members in reserved seat are vying for.
Voting will be held from 8am to 4pm without any break. The government has announced a public holiday in the poll areas on the day.
Nearly one crore voters will franchise their voting rights in the last phase UP elections.
EC sources said around two lakh members of the law enforcement agencies including the plain clothed detectives will keep vigil to ensure peaceful atmosphere in and around the polling centers. Besides, mobile courts led magistrates will remain active during the polls.
