Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Friday placed Hasan Sayed Sumon, who destroyed eyesight of his wife Rumana Manzur through torture, on fresh one-day remand in an attempt to murder case filed against him.
Metropolitan Magistrate Utpal Chowdhury passed the order after DB sub-inspector and investigation officer of the case Bahauddin Faruqi produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
Earlier, Sumon was taken on remand for five days in three phases.
Rumana, assistant professor of Dhaka University’s International Relations Department, received serious injuries and tissues of her eyes got badly damaged as her husband, Sumon, tried to gouge her eyes out and chewed her nose off at their Dhanmondi residence on June 5.
Meanwhile, people from all walks of life, including teachers of different universities, lawyers and human rights activists, under the banner of “Platform for Justice for Ruman” staged a demonstration in front of Central Shaheed Minar on Friday.
They demanded exemplary punishment to Sumon for torturing his wife Rumana.
Besides, students of University of British Columbia announced a protest rally on June 26 in front of Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada from 3pm to 4pm demanding trail of the torturer Sumon.
The also opened a group at facebook to make the protest rally a success.
A team of the DB police arrested Sumon at one of his relative’s house in the city’s Mugda area on June 15, 10 days after the brutal incident.
Rumana’s father Major (retd) Manjur Hossain filed an attempt to murder case against Sumon with Dhanmondi police station on June 6.
