Police on Saturday recovered lethal weapons from a student dormitory at Rajshahi University following a factional clash among Bangladesh Chhatra League workers
Staff Correspondent: A clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) left 10 activists injured at Rajshahi University on Saturday.
After the clash, police conducted a raid on Bangabandhu Hall from 3:30pm to 6:30pm in presence of Proctor Prof CM Zakaria.
They recovered 25 machetes, 3 Chinese axes, 13 Hasuya, 6 hockey sticks, 5 auto knives, 6 hammers, 25 iron rods, 12 bottles of Phensidyl, 8 bottles of fermented liquor and one sack of stone from several rooms belonging to the activists of both factions of the BCL, sources said.
The BCL factions, one led by Shariful Islam alias Sharif and the other by its former vice-president Rezwan Ahmed Shuvro, clashed over establishing supremacy on the campus at around 1:30pm.
Sources said Sharif’s follower Arif, Palash and Rocky chased Khaled Hossain Nayan, a supporter of Shuvro, with firearms in front of Rabindra Bhaban.
Failing to catch Nayan, they (Sharif group) stabbed Md Behesti, a fourth year student of History department, and Aminul Islam, a fourth year student of psychology department, on the Tukitaki premises.
They also went to Bangabandhu Hall and ransacked the some rooms of Sharif’s supporters.
In the counter attack, supporters of Shuvro stabbed Polash, a fourth year student of public administration department, at around 3:00pm.
Hearing the news, Shuvro-led faction took position in front of Madar Bux Hall with firearms and sharp weapons and chased the rivals.
On receiving information, a large number of law enforcers rushed to the campus and charged batons to disperse the violent BCL men. At least seven activists of both the groups were injured in the police action.
Police also arrested Shajib of English department and Mohosin Ali — both are the supporter of Sharif.
The injured were admitted to the Rajshahi Medical Collage and Hospital.
A tense situation has been prevailing on the campus.
Proctor Prof Zakaria said stern action would be taken against those disrupting the congenial academic atmosphere on the campus.
Officer-in-Charge of Motihar police Akbar Ali said additional police personnel have been deployed in and around the campus to avert further violence.
