Staff Correspondent: Bank Alfalah Limited has launched its first visa debit card and fully solar-powered ATM booth at Gulshan in the city.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman formally inaugurated the visa debit card and fully solar-powered ATM booth Saturday.
The bank launched the solar-powered ATM booth as part of its green banking initiative.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the Bangladesh Bank Governor said, “We are moving our banking activities form BASEL-II to BASEL-III, its main goal is to be more environment-friendly or green banking. We have already issued a circular in this connection.”
“If all the banks and financial institutions start green banking by introducing solar panel and energy savings bulbs in their offices, it will reduce their operational costs,” Mr Rahman pointed out.
The central bank chief said that the daily work of such organisations would be more smooth and faster if they reduce use of papers by introducing automation in their offices.
He said, “The central bank has started to use LED bulbs connected with solar panel. Primarily, it seems to be costlier but after 20 years it will be cost effective.”
Speaking on the occasion, Bank Alfalah Country Head for Bangladesh SAA Masrur said, “We have launched fully solar-powered ATM booth in the country for the first time and formally launched a debit card for our clients where we have used picture of Royal Bengal Tiger.
“We will spend some money for conservation of Royal Bengal Tiger of the Sundarbans from the earnings of the debit cards. The clients will also get instant SMS about update after using debit cards.”
Mr Masrur also said, “We have now five branches in Bangladesh and have applied to the central bank seeking permission to open five more branches by this year.”
He added: “The capital of our bank is now Tk 2.0 billion and will be doubled to Tk 4.0 billion very soon.”
Bank Alfalah Country Operations Head Shahab Khattak was also present at the launching ceremony.
