Al-Haj M. Ruhul Amin Chisty, the Pioneer of Courier Services in Bangladesh was born on April 30, 1944 in a respectable Qari family of Sonaimuri Upazila of Noakhali district. His father Late Al-haj Qari Yousuf Ali was a famous Kamel Pir (Sufi Saint) and religious thinker. Mr. Ruhul Amin received schooling for 5 years at Wasekpur Primary School, Wasekpur village where he was born. After receiving secondary education at Chandpur Shahrasti High School he passed Matriculation in 1960. He studied Commerce at Ziauddin Memorial College, Karachi for four years and obtained B.Com degree in 1964.
Mr. Ruhul Amin served in Pakistan International Air Lines from 1964-’70. He returned to Bangladesh in 1971 and took part in the Great Liberation War. He was incharge of the Muktijoddah Camp at Kashipur High School near to his native village. His elder brother M. Mokbul Ahmed lost his life in action with Pakistan Army during the Liberation War. After Independence, Mr. Amin rejoined Biman Bangladesh. While working for Biman, he used to look after his family business too. He served Biman until 1982. Thereafter he resigned from Biman Bangladesh Air Lines and engaged himself completely in their family business.
Mr. Ruhul Amin had been studying postal delivery systems, both in the public and private sectors in Bangladesh. He found that postal department delays in deliveries deter economic activities in the country and International Courier Services are very expensive. He realized that Bangladeshis will benefit from a faster but affordable means of postal delivery organization in the private sector. Finally, he decided to address the problems and established Continental Courier Services Ltd. in 1983, the first Bangladeshi courier service that became the largest national courier service in no time with 25,000 service stations spread over the country. In recognition of his valuable contribution to the development of courier services as a pioneer in Bangladesh Mr. Amin’s life sketch and courier services have been included in the syllabus of H.S.C. With continuing and relentless endeavor Mr. Amin has established Continental Group containing the following organizations: Continental Courier Services Ltd. Continental Parcel Service, Continental Lubricants Ltd., Continental CNG Filling Station, Continental Auto-Mobile Workshop and Service Center, Continental Progressive Industry (CPI), Continental Immigration Services, Continental Autos Ltd. and Continental Telecom.
Mr. Ruhul Amin Chisty was involved with student politics. He was elected General Secretary of Karachi Ziauddin Memorial College Students Union. His association with BNP regime during 1978-81 made him ardent follower of Shahid President Ziaur Rahman for his politics of development. He is directly involved with the following political and social organizations : General Secretary, Karachi Ziauddin Memorial College Students Union, Member, Bangladesh Jatiatabadi Dal (BNP), President, Zia Mancha, Dhaka Mohanagar, Founder President, Sonaimuri Upazilla Samity, Dhaka, Member, Standing Committee, DCCI, Member, Central Committee, Rate Payer’s Association, Founder President, Shatayu Aungon, Dhanmondi, Member, Dhanmondi Recreation Club, Executive Member, Noakhali Zila Samity, Convenor, Sonaimuri Upazila Bastabayan Committee and President, Bangladesh Telecom Owners Association.
Mr. Amin has been providing a variety of well-thought-out services for community development and assisting deserving candidates for both higher education and income generation. For spreading education in his native area he has founded the following institutes including a plan to establish a women college: North Wasekpur Balika Dakhil Madrasha, Ruhul Amin Chisty Registered Primary School, Hajee Yousuf Ali Kari Hafezia Madrasha, Ruhul Amin Chisty Forkania Madrasha, North Wasekpur Bhuiyan Bari Mosque, Baitul Mamur Zamay Mosque, Chisty Nibash and Ruhul Amin Chisty Women College (Proposed). He is giving scholarships every year among the students of V and VIII of all the schools and Madrashas of Noakhali through Amin-Monuza Foundation.
Mr. Amin manages and funds Chisty Selai Shikkah Kendra that has 78 sewing training centres at points of Begumgonj and Sonaimuri Upazilas to train up poor women to the area and provides them sewing machines too to become self-reliant.
Mr. Ruhul Amin has been promoting games and sports for long time in greater Noakhali. He introduced Ruhul Amin Chisty Gold Cup Football Tournament-2005 at Sonaimuri. He is one of the founding members of Dhanmondi Recreation Club too. In recognition of his contribution to Liberation War and social work Mr. Amin has received many awards including Mother Taresa Gold Medal-2003. Mawlana Bhashani Smrity Padak-2004, Lalon Gold Medal-2002, Dhaka Shahittaya Sanskriti Ghosti Gold Medal-2002, IVA Gold Medal-2002, Anainnya Sanskritik Padak-2002 and Swadhinata Sangsad Award-2004.
A well conversant in English, Urdu and Hindi Mr. Ruhul Amin Chisti has visited many countries of Europe several times including USA (14 times), Saudi Arabia, UAE, Singapore, Bankok, India and Pakistan (many times). He had been to China, Makao, Honkong, Taiwan and Nepal on business trips. He has performed Haji along his wife twice and Umrah several times.
