UGC proposes to run public universities under uniform law

The commission also proposed uniform admission tests in private universities under a cluster system

RN Desk:The University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed to supervise all public universities, except four, under a uniform law.

The university apex body made 24 recommendations, including a policy to start the uniform admission tests at private universities to reduce suffering of students.

The commission submitted its 46th annual report to President Abdul Hamid on Sunday.

UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah said: “The president gave us some instructions while submitting the report, but we have already included such directions. However, the UGC will take effective steps based on his various recommendations.”

According to the annual report, educational activities are being conducted in 46 public universities in the country currently.

Among them, Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, and Chittagong University are being run under the 1973 Ordinance.

Apart from these four universities, UGC made a uniform law to run 42 other universities, says the report.

Meanwhile, the UGC also proposed uniform admission tests in private universities under a cluster system admission test to reduce hassle in the current academic year.

In addition, the commission made recommendations to ensure equal access to education for men and women and ensure financial transparency.

The recommendations include increasing the capacity of the UGC, increasing the number of scholarships and fellowships at home and abroad for higher degrees to enhance the knowledge of teachers, researchers, and students through joint research, and exchange of experiences with leading universities.
