Tigers complete ‘Banglawash’ crushing Pakistan in 3-match ODI series

DHAKA:  A breezy unbeaten maiden ODI ton by Soumya Sarkar and well supported by Tamim Iqbal saw Bangladesh completed “Banglawash” in ODI series crushing Pakistan by eight wickets in third and final ODI match held on Wednesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur here.

Chasing 251 to win, Bangladesh cruised home with 63 balls to spare, riding on opening stand by Soumya Sarkar (127 n.o) and Tamim Iqbal (64).

Sarkar and Iqbal laid the foundation for the chase with a 145-run stand. Sarkar made the strong Pakistani bowling attacks mockery as he smashed maiden ODI century hitting all square of the ground. His 110-ball unbeaten knock included 13 fours and six towering sixes.

The left handed opener celebrated his deserving hundred after hitting a big six off Azhar Ali delivery at the deep mid wicket in 33 overs. Rahim (49 n.o) one run shot from half century provided the support in the middle and brought up the win with a four off Junaid Khan in the 39th over in the day night affairs.

Junaid Khan was the most successful bowlers for Pakistan taking two wicket conceding 67 runs. Soumya Sarkar of Bangladesh was named the player of the match while Tamim Iqbal was given the man of the series award.

After the match Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said “the way the boys are pleasing, it is pleasing. This is a good team. Soumya [Sarkar] was brilliant today. We now focus on the T20 and then Tests.” Pakistan captain Azhar Ali said “First all I would like to congratulate Bangladesh.

They played good cricket. We played well in patches but we could not put it together. As everybody knows, the senior plays have left. The youngsters have to stand up and we have to pull our heads together. We have some experience guys for T20s and Tests. We will put in a better performance.”

The only T20i between the two series will be played on Friday at the same venue. After a back to back century in the last two matches Tamim Iqbal continued his prolific from as he smashed 8 boundaries and one over boundary during his 76-ball stay on the crease.

But just then, Iqbal lost his wicket, when he was trapped in front of the wicket Junaid Khan. Bangladesh called for an review which was turned down.

Earlier, Pakistani batsmen could not capitalize opportunity of their top orders’ good start as they folded out by 250 for all in 49 overs, after the opted to bat first.

Thanks to skipper Azhar Ali for his captaincy knock of maiden ODI century and Haris Sohail useful 52 runs that helped Pakistan to post a respectable total, before the Tigers bowlers inflicted a massive blow on new look Pakistan batsmen.

However the rest batsmen of the team proved to be a wall of sand yet again. Last eight Pakistani batsmen got out under the mere score of 48 runs.

Openers Azahr Ali (101) and Sami Aslam (45) however gave a good to Pakistan contributing 91 runs for the opening stand before Nasir gave the important breakthrough to Bangladesh sending back to Aslam (45) 17th over of the match.

That brought Mohammad Hafeez (4) to join Azhar but he failed to give any support to his skipper being clean bowled by Arafat Sunny.

Azahr Ali then combined another 98 runs partnership with Haris Sohail (52) to resurrect the innings for the third wicket stand before Shakib Al Hasan again struck on Pakistan innings making clean bowled to Azhar. The right handed batsman Azahar smashed 10 boundaries during his 112-ball stay on the crease.

Sohail also followed the footprint of Azahr as he gave a back catch to Mushfiqur off Mashrafe delivery, leaving Pakistan in deep trouble. Due to reckless batting by Pakistani and tight bowling by the Tigers’ the visitors failed to recover from massive wobble losing wickets in regular intervals.

Shakib Al Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Arafat Sunny, and Mashrafe Mortaza all caused the batting debacle for Pakistanis picking up two wickets apiece for 34, 43, 43 and 44 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, hundreds of jubilant Tigers cricket fans, outside the stadium streets on Wednesday seen dancing, waving flags in celebration at their team’s brilliant 3-0 whitewash against Pakistan.
