Mahmudul Hoque Khan Dulal: How could I write down those horrified memories of the War of Liberation? But I have to write as I have no alternative to it. It was also an integral part of my life and for that why I have decided to write something on it. I was also a little bit involved with Language Movement in 1952, Joint Front Polls in 56, and Mass Upsurge in 69. Apart from this in the bad days of the nation how do I sit idle without doing anything. I was scared about my life and the security of my family as well. Yet I want to say the matters which took place before my eyes. The Pakistani Bengali Armed Forces used to train up the local young people in front of my shop. The training courses conducted at three places of Mohakhali in Dhaka. I observed a sign of change in the mind of Bengali people before the day of March 25 but I could not understand anything. But seeing the poster of Bangabandhu’s photo which was hanged at my shop’s wall, an act of revenge started to grow in some people’s mind. Most of the locals identified me as the agent of Awami League.
During the polls of 1970, I along with a man named Shakwat Hossain who had a resemblance with Bangabandhu and also he used to love him very much went to observe an election camp at Mirpur. No sooner had we reached there most of the people begun to rebuke us with filthy words. They started to pelting us stones and torn up the posters of Bangabandhu. Yhe agitated people broke down two glasses of our car.
We, the two whenever used to go for visiting election camps the people would give us a feed back by saying “ Mujib Bhai the casting of votes is going on well.”
They would say shakwat as Mujib Bhai as he was same to look at which I mentioned earlier. I was marked as an agent of India when I took photographs of the polls. Awami League won in the polls of 70. On the occasion of coming Bangabandhu, the Central Awami League Office made a stage before my house in a bid to campaign for votes. A symbol of a boat was hanged on the dias.
On March 25, I along with Abdul Jabbar, a singer went directly to the residence of Bangabandhu from Radio Station. Seeing us he told to come inside. He still had been discussing with the Pakistanis. Singer abdul Jabbar said, “Baba, poet Fazal-E- Khoda has composed a song. Bangabandhu asked him to sing that song. Abdul Jabbar started to sing, Bangla dabi maneyna jara pitao, pitao(Those who do not accept demand of Bangla bet them and bet them.). Then Bangabandhu told him to stop the sing and said he would listento it later. Bangabandhu went to inside for discussions with the Pakistani. Before going inside he asked Begum Mujib to entertain us with tea. Is there anything to your house for entertaining? Mujib said, “If nothing give them Muri( dry rice) at least. I was about to get up for going home then Jabbar said he would also come with me. On the way of my residence I saw at Farmgate that the costly trees ( Segun trees) are being cut down by labours with the help of police. I asked jabbar what was going on.The army convoy was coming from our opposite direction. Jabbar told me that everything would be okayed, and also said not to be scared. He was with me at my residence till 6 p. m. The Mohakhali Wireless Station was the only one centre to communicate with Pakistan and rest of the world and for this why it was surrounded with huge army. All on a sudden the use of canon, machinegun and rocket was began at 11-30 p.m. and following the attack many passers-by and floating people lost their lives.I the morning when I was on the way of my shop I saw on the road of Gulshan people are running with their belongings. But I could not say where they were going. An order was announced through radio in the morning to submit all types of weapons like gun, ammunition, lethal weapons, sword etc at Tejgaon police station. ( To be continued).
