Take stern action against errant vehicles: Sheikh Hasina

Staff correspondent :  The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, Friday directed the authorities concerned to take stern action against the vehicles and drivers without having valid licences as well as against reckless drivers.  ‘It cannot continue any longer that instead of drivers, helpers would drive the cars and our children will die in road accidents,’ she said.

She also asked the communications ministry to provide buses on demand from the schools and colleges on hire basis on various occasions including sports tournaments.

Hasina also asked the law enforcing agencies to bring those drivers to book who talks by mobile phones while driving their vehicles.

She requested people of all walks of life to abide by traffic rules for their own safety. ‘We’ve to be highly conscious when we are on the streets,’ she said.

The prime minister said none could give back what these families here have lost. ‘Giving back your sons is beyond anybody’s capacity. But I myself, the government and my party would always stand beside you in every necessity and crisis,’ she said.

Hasina donated Tk 100,000 for each of the 39 families who lost their children and Tk 50,000 to 18 families whose children received injuries in the Mirsarai accident.

Besides, another Tk 100,000 was donated to family of student Abhik Das whose father died from heart attack when he first heard that his son Abhik died in the road accident, though Abhik narrowly escaped death. The cheque was handed over to his mother Rabapati Das.

‘May Allah, the Almighty, not give such deep shock and sorrow to anyone. I know how it feels when our dearest ones leave this world for ever. May Allah give you the strength to endure the pain of losing your beloved children.’

The prime minister made the soulful remarks while speaking at a condolence meeting held at the Abu Torab Bahumukhi High School Friday morning.  She earlier arrived at the upazila at 10:35am by helicopter.

The meeting was arranged as the premier visited the grief-stricken village to console the family members of 39 students who were killed in a road accident on July 11. The accident took place when a truck carrying the students fell into roadside ditch.

Of the 39 students who died in the accident, 27 were from the Abu Torab High School while the others were from Abu Torab Government Primary School, Abu Torab Fazil Madrassah and Professor Kamal Uddin Chowdhury College.

The members of the victim families who lost their beloved children burst into tears finding amongst them the prime minister who consoled them by hugging and touching their heads.

The prime minister said she has come to express her sympathy and solidarity with the grief-stricken families who lost their dearest offspring.

She said just after coming to know about the tragic accident, she had ordered the ministers concerned to do their best for rescuing the children and taking them to hospitals. ‘I cannot bear the grief. I know how it feels to lose the dearest ones.’

Hasina said people could not endure the sorrow of losing one or two dearest ones while she was bearing tragic memory of her 18 family members including her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who were killed on August 15, 1975.

‘I see the face of my youngest brother Sheikh Russell among your children,’ she said sobbing. ‘I don’t want mothers to lose their children in unnatural circumstances.’

The prime minister later visited the spot where the accident had occurred. She ordered the authorities concerned to set up a monument in memory of the dead students.

A special prayer session was held seeking eternal peace for the departed souls and divine blessings for the whole nation.

Awami League lawmaker Mosharraf Hossain, industries minister Dilip Barua, primary and mass education minister Afsarul Amin, state minister for environment and forests Hasan Mahmud were, among others, present.

The local Awami League leaders also requested the prime minister to set up a trauma centre at a place adjacent to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway as accidents on this road have become a regular feature.
