Students of Barisal University protest campus violence

SRN Desk:      Students of Barisal University formed a human chain at the university Thursday morning protesting the frequent violence on the campus.

They organised the event after five students received injuries in an attack by BCL cadres and outsiders on the campus on Wednesday during the observance of the Independence Day.

The students said that the university authority failed to ensure minimum security for them.

As a result, both BCL men and outsiders backed by the ruling party student leaders cause violence on the campus, they said.

If students protest the criminal activities of the BCL, they also fall victims to their attacks, they alleged.

It may be mentioned that two factions of BCL unit and some outsiders were locked in a clash on the campus on Wednesday over delivering speeches at a programme organised by the university authority to observe the Independence Day.

During the clash, five students — Shamim Shikdar, Saiful Shoyeb, Uzzal Roy, Zahirul Islam and Nirob Biswas – received injuries.

Three of them were admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

A tense situation has still been prevailing since the incident of clash on the campus.

University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Harun-or-Rashid said the Zila School, which is now being used as temporary campus of the university, does not have boundary fences, making it difficult to prevent entrance of outsiders.

Tough disciplinary and legal action would be taken against the troublemakers, the VC said.

Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Shakhawat Hossain said police intensified patrol in the campus area.
