NEWYORK: Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday underscored the need for implementing women’s empowerment to achieve the UN’s ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’ goal within 2030.

“Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has adopted development policies for gender equality and woman empowerment…It is high time to implement them to achieve the goals within the stipulated time,” an official press release quoted her saying that at the panel discussion titled as ‘Gender Equality and unified society for the sustainable world’.

The panel discussion was a part of the informal discussion of world leaders on ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment for sustainable World’.

“Bangladesh is the role model of women’s empowerment. …from our Prime Minister to Parliamentary Officials and Ministers, from UN peacekeeping mission to garments industry- our women are brilliantly performing their duties in individual sectors,’ she said highlighting outstanding contribution of women in different fields of development.

She stressed the need to strengthen the global leader’s roles in promoting gender equality and preventing violation against woman, added the release.

Later, Shirin participated in the panel discussion on ‘Growing inequalities and distrust in Government: Breaking the cycle” organized by the UN’s High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).
