RAB arrests Rana Plaza owner from frontier Benapole

ranaRN Desk: Elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB ) yesterday  arrested fugitive owner of Rana Plaza Sohel Rana from Benapole frontiers four days after the eight-storey structure collapsed as he was visibly fleeing the country to
evade justice.

“Acting on a secret information that he (Rana) was at
Benapole borders to flee India, a RAB team from the headquarters
flew to Beanpole onboard a helicopter and arrested him,” RAB’s
director general Mokhlesur Rahman told a crowded press briefing
minutes after Rana was flown to Dhaka by the same chopper.

He said: “The building was declared abandoned earlier . . .
he is the main responsible person for the tragedy.”

State minister for local government Jahangir Kabir Nanak
earlier disclosed at Savar to media the report of his arrest to
be exposed to justice for involuntary murders of several hundred
people.

Rana was brought before the media for a photo session but was
not allowed to speak to journalists while the news conference was
told that he was set to be handed over to police’s detective
branch for subsequent legal actions.

Rana went into hiding soon after the collapse of the Rana
Plaza while reports said his mother died of a heart attack
yesterday.

Officials said Rana would be exposed to trial on several
charges and under diffident laws including the Building
Construction Act.

The arrest came three days after Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina ordered arrest of Rana and the owners of the garments
factories housed in the structure.

The factory owners reportedly forced several thousand
workers join the production lines even after cracks were reported
and warnings were issued about their exposure to fatal collapse.

Owners of three garment units and two engineers responsible
for buildings safety were arrested and remanded in police custody
yesterday on court orders as the death toll continued to rise
prompting angry workers to vent their anger taking to street.

Police said chairman of New Wave Buttons and New Wave Style
factories Bazlus Samad and managing director of one of the plants
Mahmudur Rahaman Tapash and municipal engineers Imtimam Hossain
and Alam Mian would face charges of involuntary murders of
several hundred people.

They said owners of the garment factories, which were housed
at the Rana Plaza at suburban Savar gave in as advised by the
owners association as they were hunted for forcing workers to
join the work ignoring warnings about cracks.

They said two municipal engineers were arrested as they gave
the safety clearance for the building after an inspection five
days ago while a manhunt was underway to track down building
owner who went into hiding since the structure caved in.

The High Court earlier ordered personal appearance of the
building and factory owners on April 30 to explain their role for
the tragedy.
