DHAKA: President M Abdul Hamid yesterday urged the European Union to extend its continued support to put pressure on the Myanmar government to repatriate the displaced Rohingya people who took shelter in Bangladesh territory being the worst victims of atrocities in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

The President came with the call as the newly appointed ambassador of European Union (EU) Rensje Teerink presented her credential after she was ceremonially welcomed to the Bangabhaban this afternoon.

President Hamid also lauded all-out supports, including steps taken by EU to resolve the Rohingya issue, President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed the reporters after the meeting.

Welcoming the head of the EU delegation in Bangladesh, the President said the European Union is one of the significant development partners of Bangladesh, which has been playing very conducive role for country’s socioeconomic progress by ensuring quota-free and duty-free access of Bangladeshi products to the EU markets.

“Besides, the assistances of EU in various development projects play an important role in the overall development of Bangladesh,” he said, hoping that this supports would further increased in days ahead.

The ambassador said the bilateral trade and investment relations between EU and Bangladesh is increasing day by day.

She assured Bangladesh of providing the continued support of EU to ensure the socio-economic development of the country.

The EU head of delegation also highly appreciated the humanitarian role of Bangladesh in Rohingya issue and subsequently its pragmatic steps taken also in this regard.
