President, PM for raising awareness against tobacco consumption

DHAKA: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon all to make united efforts to wage anti-tobacco campaigns across the country to have healthy population to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh.

They came up with the call in separate messages issued on the eve of “World No Tobacco Day” 2017.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said consumption of tobacco products is threat to public health and national economy.

“In every six seconds one person dies of cancer, cardiac arrest, stroke, diabetes, asthma and other prolonged respiratory diseases in the entire world because of tobacco consumption,” he added.

Abdul Hamid said the government has put highest importance on public health.

“The government has amended Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2005 in 2013 and formulated Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Rules in 2015,” he added.

The president said pictorial health warning messages covering 50 percent areas of packets in tobacco products are being printed as per law.

He said smoking at public place and transport has been banned to protect non smokers.

Abdul Hamid said keeping consistency with sustainable development goals (SDGs), the theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 has been made “Tobacco – a threat to development”.

He said if the usage of tobacco can be reduced, development of public health and national economy will be accelerated.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said smoking and usage of tobacco gradually drive an individual, family and society towards ruination.

She said tobacco consumption kills nearly 60 lakh people every year in the world.

“If proper measures cannot be taken immediately, the number will cross 80 lakh by 2030,” she said adding that six percent of total cost for health sector in the entire world has been spent for diseases caused by tobacco consumption.

Sheikh Hasina said tobacco consumption and smoking is increasing in the developing world. “Around 80 percent of tobacco consumers live in lower and middle income countries,” she added.

The Prime Minister said the government has taken multidimensional steps highlighting the harmful aspects of tobacco consumption to raise public awareness.

She said all workplaces have been brought under public places to protect non smokers. The prime minister urged people all start of life including private organizations to make united efforts to create public awareness to reduce the uses of tobacco.

“We will be able to make Bangladesh free from tobacco aimed at establishing a developed and prosperous country by 2041 through concerted efforts of all,” she hoped.

The president and the prime minister wished success of all programmes marking the World No Tobacco Day on May 31.
