Politicians urged to resolve crisis over next elections

RN Desk: A group of academics, journalists and political analysts on Thursday urged the leaders of the major political parties to find out a solution to resolve the crisis over the form of interim- government during the upcoming parliamentary election.
They made the call while addressing a seminar on ‘Democracy, Elections and Political Crisis: Role of Mass Media’ organized by the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the occasion of the organisation’s 28th founding anniversary.
The panelists also put stress on the need of neutral roles of the Election Commission, and cooperation of the political parties, civil society and mass media.
Speaking on the occasion, the Media Adviser to the Prime Minister, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said, the politicians must find out way to resolve the existing political crisis so that the non-political forces cannot enter national politics.
“Election Commission plays essential roles during elections, no matter whether under caretaker system or partisan government. The election is to be held under a free and fair atmosphere.” he said.
He also sought cooperation from the leaders of all political parties, civil society and mass media as well.
The immediate-past Election Commissioner B.G M Sakhawat Hossain (Ret.) expressed his doubt about the holding of the polls due to conflict between the two major political parties.
‘I have no answer to the questions whether the next general election will be held or not,’ he said, terming the next parliamentary election as the ‘most vital’ for the country because people want peace and prosperity.
He said, “We hope that the election will be held with all political parties free from the external interference.”
DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique called the political parties to start negotiation for an amicable settlement.
In his keynote paper, DU Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque recommended for ‘neo-democratic government’ where everyone would be able to enjoy their rights and opportunities without any restriction.
Chaired by DUJA President MM Jasim, the seminar was also addressed, among others, by mass communication and journalism Professor Sheikh Abdus Salam, News Today Editor Riazuddin Ahmed, private television Boishakhi TV’s Chief Executive Officer Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Prime Minister’s deputy secretary Ashraful Alam Khokon and general secretary of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity Elias Khan. Earlier in the morning, a colorful procession was brought out from TSC and it paraded the campus.
