DHAKA: A Dhaka court today sent a landlady from capital’s Panthapath area to jail in a case lodged over thrashing her tenants and evicting them from their home for failing to pay their one-month due rent.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed sent Nur Akter Shampa to jail, scrapping a bail plea filed by her lawyer.
Earlier, police produced Shampa before court and investigation officer and Kalabagan Police Station sub-inspector Saidur Rahman pleaded to place her on five-day remand. Shampa’s lawyer, however, argued for her bail.
After hearing the both sides, the court sent Shampa to jail.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the lady from Dhanmandi area last night.
Nur Akter Shampa, owner of house number 58/7 in capital’s Panthapath area, beat her tenant Md Selim Hossain and his wife as they couldn’t pay their due rent amid the coronavirus crisis, and threw them out of their home in middle of the night with their two children, one of them was only two-month old.
Shampa even threatened law enforcers as they tried to convince her to take the helpless tenants back.
Later, tenant Md Selim Hossain filed the case against Shampa with Kalabagan Police Station.
