National broadcast bill to be finalised soon: Tarana

National broadcast bill to be finalised soon: Tarana

DHAKA:State Minister for Information Tarana Halim today said the government would finalise a national broadcast bill soon.

“A bill on the basis of the broadcast policy will be finalised within the current tenure of the present government,” she said while speaking as a chief guest at the 6th founding anniversary of the Television, Film and Photography (TFP) Department of Dhaka University (DU) at the RC Majumdar Auditorium on the campus.

After 43 years of the country’s independence, the Awami League-led government in August 2014 issued a gazette notification on the ‘National Broadcasting Policy 2014’ to ensure free flow of information and responsibility of the media.

Addressing the occasion, Tarana said she would ask the authorities concerned to introduce a special grant for the students of the department to encourage them to make movies.

Highlighting the development activities of the present government, she said the government had been playing an outstanding role for the country’s development under the guidelines of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“Bangladesh will be a developing country by 2025”, the state minister said, adding that the per capita income has already reached $1610, which is one of the three indices for graduating from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to developing status.

Marking the occasion, Tarana inaugurated a three-day film festival, organised for the first time by the TFP Department. A number of short-films will be screened at the festival, which will end Thursday.

Social Sciences Faculty Dean Sadeka Halim, TFP Department Chairman AJM Shafiul Alam, President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Ekushey TV CEO Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and eminent filmmaker Syed Salauddin Zaki also spoke on the occasion.
