The whole mystique of Green Delta Insurance Company Ltd. is related to Nasir A. Choudhury, the man who had inspiration, the skill and the determination to turn a dream into a reality. Reflecting on the childhood Nasir Choudhury recalls his father Khan Bahadur (a title conferred by the British Empire) Gausuddin Ahmad Choudhury. He was not only a Zamindar, but also a member of the Assam Legislative Council in united India from 1937 to 1 947. Mr. Choudhury proudly narrates how his father used to help people going beyond his Zamindari rules and regulations. At the young age like the youths of his time Nasir Choudhury was involved with progressive politics. He also had a brief life in journalism as a member of the editorial team in the weekly Naobelal. Active participation in the great language movement and in all other socio-cultural activities had an effect on his academic life as he was barred from taking admission to the bachelor degree in Dhaka University. He had his bachelor degree from Mymenshingh and finally had his master’s degree in History from Dhaka University.

Mr. Choudhury’s professional career started on 24 September 1958, as a management trainee 8t Pakistan Insurance Corporation in Head Office in Karachi, Pakistan. Soon after joining, he attended a two-month full time course on Insurance and reinsurance at the College of Insurance of the Chartered Institute of London from September 1961 to November 1961.

After completion of the programme, he was attached for practical advanced training on insurance and reinsurance in the Eagle Star Insurance Company in London for 10 (ten) months. He was then sent by his employer to Munich Reinsurance Company for two months for advanced training on reinsurance. On completion of his fourteen months long training in the UK and Germany, he returned to the Pakistan Insurance Corporation’s Head Office at Karachi an.d served at various important positions there. In July 1969 he was posted in Pakistan Insurance Corporation’s Regional Office at Chittagong.

After the liberation of the Bangladesh, the Pakistan Insurance Corporation was renamed as Bangladesh Insurance Corporation. Since Mr. Choudhury was the only well trained and experienced senior officer on reinsurance, he was posted to the head office of the newly formed Bangladesh Insurance Corporation. Mr. Choudhury, being at the forefront of reviving the insurance industry of Bangladesh, was one of those visionary individuals to develop, design and enact the reinsurance arrangement for the newly established Corporation after the liberation war in 1971. He arranged the first reinsurance programme of a newly liberated country with the help and guidance of two reinsurance experts from India – Mr. A C Mukharjee of New India Assurance Company Limited and Mr. S K Desai of the than India-Re, New Delhi and also Mr. Peter Carpmel of Tyser & Co Ltd and Mr. Schwartz of Munich Re during the months of January & February 1972. When Insurance was fully nationalized in May 1973, Mr. Choudhury was’ appointed as In-charge of Underwriting and Re-insurance of the Shadharan Bima Corporation which he continued in various capacities till 2 February 1983.

In 1985, when insurance was allowed in private sector, he, along with some of his friends – most of them were working abroad-floated Green Delta Insurance Company Limited which started its operation with effect from 1 January 1986. It was the only company in Bangladesh which was floated by the professionals and run by the professionals and as a result the Green Delta become one of the leading insurance companies in Bangladesh right from the very first year of its operation in 1 986 and continued till today ie 2010.

As his insurance company went on right direction, he created Delta Brae Housing, Union Capital, Jalalabad Telecom, Green Delta Financial Services Ltd. and Nascom (Pvt.) Ltd. Mr. Choudhury was also a sponsor director of the Ekushey Television, Bangladesh’s first private television network.

As a captain of the country’s insurance sector he was Chairman of the Bangladesh Insurance Association, the official body of all the private insurance companies in the country, for two consecutive terms- from 2001 to 2004. He is also a member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Bangladesh, E.C member of Bangladesh-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, member of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A widely traveled person Nasir A. Choudhury is closely associated with leading insurers in the renowned reinsurance markets of UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong-Kong, Malaysia, Japan and India etc.

Nasir Choudhury is married to Khurshida Choudhury who hails from Maijbhandari, a renowned Islamic saint family in Chittagong. His son Waqar A Choudhury, Managing Director & CEO of Green Delta Financial Services Ltd. and daughter Farzana Chowdhury, Additional Managing Director of Green Delta Insurance Co. Ltd. Mr. Choudhury received a number of national and international awards for his outstanding contribution in the arena of insurance like International Quality Crown Award in Diamond Category in London in 2009, International Star Award for Leadership in Quality 2009 presented in Paris, France etc. One of his most notable achievements was the DHL-Daily Star Lifetime Achievement Award 2009 by DHL-Daily Star in Bangladesh. “If you have God, family and friends, you may stumble, but you will never hit the ground.” Nasir Choudhury is completely committed to this saying.
