Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh has signed deals with financial intelligence agencies in 10 countries for exchanging information related to money laundering.
Bangladesh Bank has signed the deals, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday, replying to a question of Naogaon-4 constituency lawmaker Emaj Uddin Pramanik.
The government has also taken initiatives to amend the Money Laundering Act 2009 and the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 to make anti-money laundering activities effective, she said, adding that the government had no plan to establish a ministry on anti-corruption.
On maritime disputes with Myanmar, the prime minister said Bangladesh has already registered the matter as a complaint with the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea. The hearing on the disputes will complete this year. “It is expected that the disputes will be resolved by 2012,” she said, adding that there has also been progress in resolving disputes on territorial waters with India.
Hasina told the House that about 28,000 Myanmar nationals have been languishing in two camps in Bangladesh—Kutupalong and Noyapara.
Besides, about half a million Rohingyas illegally entered the country in the last five years and they have been living in Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The government is trying through its diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue and has requested Myanmar authorities to take back their nationals, Hasina said. Myanmar will soon repatriate 2,415 citizens from the two camps, she added.
Responding to a question of Tajul Islam from Comilla-9 constituency, the prime minister said prisoners are being trained on handloom, tailoring, carpentry and other technical subjects so that they can utilise the imprisonment period. Female prisoners are also given training on cosmetology.
“The government will soon start training prisoners on garment work so they can rehabilitate themselves after completion of their imprisonment,” said the prime minister.
