Staff Correspondent: Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta on Saturday said Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) has no power to legalise an illegal matter like the caretaker government system.
“It has been clearly mentioned in the verdict of the highest court that the caretaker government system is illegal and unconstitutional,” he said while addressing a discussion in the city.
Bangabandhu O Jatiya Char Neta Parishad organised the discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium, marking the 88th birth anniversary of AHM Quamruzzaman who along with three other close associates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated inside Dhaka Central Jail on November 3 in 1975.
Suranjit, also co-chairman of the special parliamentary committee on constitutional amendment, called upon the BNP-led opposition again to return to the House.
“Don’t create an artificial crisis in the country. Leave the street and come to Jatiya Sangsad. Speak on all issues you like to talk in the House,” he said.
He further said, “The constitution has a provision for interim government. We all can make it a time-befitting one through talks by keeping a provision that it will carry out only the routine work of the administration.”
BNP can join the House to take part in the discussion on constitutional amendment bill, he said, adding that the door for talks will remain open. “I strongly believe that BNP will realise its faults and return to Jatiya Sangsad.”
Suranjit, also a member of the Awami League advisory council, said AL is not against retaining of the caretaker government system but the highest court has declared it illegal.
“AL has never indulged in politics of conspiracy. It never wants to come to power through the back door as it believes in handing over power through free, fair and neutral election.”
Posing a question to BNP as to why it has been scared of in absence of the caretaker government he said all elections held under the AL government were acceptable.
