Inu asks TV channel owners’ to project peace, non-communalism

DHAKA: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu asked the owners of television channels of the country to project peace, development and non-communalism before the people.

“Don’t promote linguistic distortion or bad culture,” he told a meeting of Association of Television Channel Owners’ (ATCO) in the conference room of the information ministry.

State Minister for Information Tarana Halim, Prime Minister’s Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Prime Minister’s Advisor for Commerce and Industry Salman F Rahman, also president of ATCO, were present at the meeting.

Inu said, “We have to remember that settled issues like the Four Fundamental State Principles, the declaration of Independence by Father of the Nation, the martyrdom of three million people and the genocide of 1971 should be kept above controversy”.

Razakars and freedom fighters should not be weighed on the same scale, he said.

Responding to a query on Section 32 of the proposed Digital Security Law, he said, “The law would be sent to the parliamentary standing committee and if anybody has any concern, complaint or suggestion, they can send it to us. We will pass it on to the committee.”

The information minister said that his ministry would monitor an earlier directive given to the TV cable operators that asked them to show local TV channels before the foreign ones. The meeting also discussed ways and means to cut costs and increase profits of the TV channels.

The meeting was attended by high officials of the ministry, relevant departmental chiefs and owners and CEOs of most TV channels.
