Desk Report: Known as king’s party after its inception under the post-1/11 regime, the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) now came up with the formula of national interim government as another crisis looms large over the same issue of caretaker government.
Chairman of the PDP Dr Ferdous Ahmed Qureshi proposed national interim government as an alternative to caretaker government at a press briefing held at the PDP central office in the city Saturday.
He said fearing that party government could manipulate election results caretaker-government system was incorporated into the constitution through an act of parliament.
“But, the last three general elections prove that the non-elected persons of caretaker government depend on the bureaucracy and are totally incapable of solving problems during election period,” Qureshi, also a journalist by profession, told the journalists at the press meet.
According to his proposal, the President will dissolve the cabinet three months before the tenure of the government ends and form a new cabinet.
In this cabinet, the Prime Minister will be selected from the ruling party whereas the Home Minister from the opposition party. They will not be allowed to participate in the election but can stand for the president. The duration of the stand-in government will be three months.
