Dr Shirin calls for highlighting women’s achievements

DHAKA: Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today underscored the need for highlighting outstanding
contribution of women in different fields of development through research
works.

She said, “Women are performing brilliantly in every sector including
agriculture, economics and politics. Contribution of many women is not
recognized although they deserve it. Historians should identify women’s
contribution in their research works.”

Dr Shirin came up with the observation while addressing the 49th annual
International Conference of Bangladesh Itihas Parisad, at teacher-Student
Center (TSC) here as the chief guest.

“The life of our Prime Minister is an extraordinary example of the
history of females’ success in South Asia,” Dr Shirin said, adding she struggled
for democracy, establishing human rights and developing people’s living standard.

The Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly
to built a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu
Shiekh Mujibur Rahman.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni inaugurated the conference which
was held with the theme “Females in History: South Asia Context”.

Incumbent Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh
Professor Dr. Kazi Shahidullah and former UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan
addressed the programme with DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) and president of
Bangladesh Itihas Parisad Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni put emphasis on
young generation to know the glorious past of Bangalee nation. “Future
leaders cannot be built without knowing the real history,” she added.

She hoped that the conference will play a proactive role in projecting
real history as well as changing mindset of people towards women.

Distinguished historians, experts, university professors and researchers
from Bangladesh and India have presented 35 essays at the conference.
