Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, a successful businessman and an energetic promoter of electronic media has been trying ceaselessly to further the cause of economy and culture. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of ATN Bangla, 1st Satellite TV Channel of Bangladesh and ATN News Ltd. Born in 1954 in a respectable Muslim family of Dinajpur, Dr. Rahman’s father’s name is late Alhaj Matiur Rahman and mother’s name is late Jamila Khatun. He did his B.A (hons.) in political science in 1978 from University of Dhaka. Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman took part in the War of Liberation in 1971, when he was a college student.
Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman made Bangladesh known to the world by winning EMMY award for a children’s program produced by ATN Bangla, a very popular TV channel for Bangali speaking People both in the country as well as elsewhere in the world. The international Academy of Television Arts and Science and UNICEF jointly gave the prestigious award to ATN Bangla for its program “Amrao Pari” (we can also do).
Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman received the honorary Doctorate Degree from Imperial College of University of London. British European University conferred the degree on him on 23rd October, 2005 for his extraordinary role in the field of media and communications.
He started his business career while he was studying Political Science in Dhaka University in 1973-74. During that time he established a firm named Friends International which used to export handicrafts. His next venture was garment. Seven times he was awarded president’s Export Trophy for his performance and contribution to garments industry. He was declared a CIP (Commercially Important Person) for his remarkable export performance. Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman was the Vice President of BGMEA (Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association) and a member of FBCCI (Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry).
In 1994, he established Multi-Media Production Company Limited with a view to exporting video software of TV programs abroad. He started exporting video software to Singapore and Thailand. Under this company the first private satellite TV channel ATN Bangla started operation in Bangladesh to telecast news and programs in more than 150 countries.
A renowned businessman and a man of vision Mr. Mahfuzur Rahman has made a conglomerate namely ATN Group of companies by applying his relentless efforts, hard working and merit which consists of Multi-Media Production Co. Ltd., ATN Bangla Ltd., ATN News Ltd., ATN Electronics Ltd., ATN Collection Ltd., ATN Airways Ltd., Mass Media Ltd., Asian Television News Ltd., ATN Software Ltd., ATN Call Centre Ltd., ATN Records Ltd., ATN Movies Ltd. and five Garments Industries Ltd. which under Friends Group of Companies.
A widely travelled person, Dr. Rahman directly promotes cultural activities by creating opportunity for those who have possibilities to prove their worth as artistes. As a lover of music, he upholds the tradition and culture of Bangladesh. Married and father of five children, Dr. Mafuzur Rahman contributes regularly to human resource development.
To his credit Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman received scores of awards/crests so far both locally and internationally for his outstanding contributions to the economic growth as well as our cultural arena.
