Staff Correspondent : Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Tuesday said despite a cabinet nod on the proposed bill on constitution amendment scope is still there for discussion on the caretaker government issue.
“The cabinet’s approval to the bill proposed by the special committee on constitution amendment does not mean that the door for discussion has been shut,” he said.
The Law minister said it when the reporters drew his attention to the comment of BNP Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed that the government had shut the door for discussion following the cabinet approval.
Shafique was talking to the journalists after attending a discussion on the proposed Power of Attorney Act 2011 at the Bidyut Bhaban in the capital.
Meanwhile, Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta on Tuesday echoed the same view saying that the option of retaining caretaker government system through discussion is still open.
“Suranjit, also the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on law, justice and parliamentary affairs, said this at a briefing at Parliament Media Secretariat.
Shafique said the opposition could discuss the caretaker issue at the special committee on constitution amendment; but they did not do so.
He said: “The bill now will be placed in parliament; the House will send it to the parliamentary
standing committee on law affairs for scrutiny; the committee, after scrutinising the bill, will place it again in the parliament. The parliament will then discuss the proposed amendment.”
“The opposition can take part in discussions at any of these stages,” he said adding: “The opposition’s claim about shutting the door for discussion is baseless.”
“Copies of the proposed bill were sent to the opposition members as the special committee submitted its report on 8 June. They could raise objection after getting it. But they did not do that,” he alleged.
