China is willing to facilitate BD-Myanmar dialogue: Wang Yi

DHAKA: Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi yesterday expressed Beijing’s eagerness to facilitate a dialogue between Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis as he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “We’re willing to facilitate the dialogue between Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve Rohingya crisis,” premier’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted him as saying while briefing reporters after the meeting at Ganabhaban this evening.

The Chinese foreign minister, he said, acknowledged that the Rohingya crisis was a big challenge for Bangladesh and described it as an internal problem of Myanmar.

Wang said China also did not want the progress of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC) to be slowed down for the Rohingya issue either.

Sheikh Hasina reiterated her call to the international community including China to mount pressure on Myanmar to take back their nationals from Bangladesh.

“Myanmar will have to take back them with safety, security and dignity for a durable solution to the problem . . . We’ve good relations with Myanmar, but the Rohingyas are their people and they will have to take them back,” she said.

Narrating the plight of the Rohingya people, particularly women and children, the premier said Bangladesh gave them shelter to them on humanitarian grounds.

The premier reaffirmed Bangladesh’s zero tolerance policy against terrorism. “It’s our decision not to allow anyone to use Bangladesh’s soil for carrying out insurgent activities in the neighbouring countries,” she said.

The Chinese foreign minister recalled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visits to China in 2010 and 2014 as well as the visit of the Chinese President to Bangladesh in 2016.

He said he is now touring Bangladesh to see the progress of “Strategic Partnership Cooperation” that the two countries agreed for it during the Chinese president’s visit to Bangladesh.

The Chinese foreign minister conveyed their president’s greetings to the Bangladesh premier.

On Bangladesh-China economic cooperation, Wang Yi said his country’s concessional loan to Bangladesh crossed five billion dollars. “China wants to help Bangladesh more under the South-South cooperation,” he said.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, PM’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Bangladesh Ambassador to China Fazlul Karim and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ma Mingqiang were present on the occasion.
