Call for distribution of Jakat through institutions

DHAKA: Capable Muslims should offer Jakat (obligatory donation of wealth in Islam) among the poor people through institutions, including the government’s Jakat fund, opined speakers at a seminar here yesterday.

In addition to the government’s Jakat fund, Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) can also be a good option in this regard, they observed.

“We should distribute Jakat for the welfare of the people,” said Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI) President Selima Ahmed, speaking at the seminar titled “Dhaka Ahsania Mission for humanitarian services: Jakat is not mercy, but a right” at the Daily Star Centre in the city.

DAM President Kazi Rafiqul Alam presided over the seminar while Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Chairman Hafiz Ahmed Mazumdar was present on the occasion, among others.

Selima Ahmed said everyone should distribute Jakat willingly for the welfare of the life here and hereafter.

She urged the capable Muslims to give Jakat in a process so that the poor can use the fund according to their needs and for better living in future. “Jakat does not reduce resources, rather increases. It will create an equal society,” she added.

Selima Ahmed lauded the DAM for taking different welfare projects and said the mission is working relentlessly for the humanity by implementing various projects, including beggar rehabilitation programme, Ahsania Mission Children City, Center for Destitute Women and Abandoned Children.

She called upon the people to distribute their Jakat through DAM for expediting its existing and upcoming projects.

Kazi Rafiqul Alam said Jakat helps the poor people to become self-reliant.

He said DAM provides high quality services towards unity, peace and development of social and spiritual life for the humanity in general and for the disadvantaged and suffering people in particular.
