BRTC will procure 440 buses to make easy communications

Desk Report: Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is going to introduce articulated bus service on different city routes to modernize and ease the communication.

The service will be commissioned with 50 buses to be procured from India, sources said.

Deputy General Manager of the BRTC said the corporation will procure a total of 440 buses from India and the cost will be borne from US$ 1 billion soft loan given by Indian government.

Of those, he said 290 are double-deckers, 100 are single-deckers and 50 are articulated buses. Tender process is going on to procure the buses, he added.

The articulated bus service is part of the government’s plan to put in place a mass bus transit system in the city to make the city’s communication comfortable, easy and speedy.

Under the plan, the government, soon after coming to power in 2009, decided to procure 970 buses on priority basis from China, South Korea and India.

Of them, 275 buses have already been procured from China at a cost of Tk 3.2 million each and 80 buses from South Korea at Tk 7 million each. Another 255 Korean buses would reach Dhaka by August this year at a cost of Taka 1.78 billion, BTRC sources said.
