Staff Correspondent: Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited has joined Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) in Bangladesh, an coalition to use mobile phones for delivering health information to expectant and new mothers in the country.
The company has signed an agreement with D.Net, a social enterprise and the coordinator of the MAMA coalition recently.
Nazmul Hassan, managing director of Beximco Pharma, and Dr Ananya Raihan, executive director of D.Net signed the deal at a ceremony at the company’s corporate in the city office, said a press release.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has catalysed the formation of the public-private coalition to support the implementation of the service in the country.
The US agency formed the coalition as a part of a new Global Health Initiative of United States, the news release.
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Access to Information (A2I) Programme at Prime Minister’s Office are local official partners while Johnson and Johnson, United Nations Foundation, mHealth Alliance and Baby Center are the global partners of the initiative, it said.
Under the leadership of the Government of Bangladesh, MAMA Bangladesh will deliver life-saving health messages to Bangladeshi women and their families.
The health messages will be disseminated among the rural women in the country to make them aware about self-care during pregnancy, dispel myths and misconceptions, highlight warning signs, connect women with local health services, reinforce breast feeding practices, explain the benefits of family planning, and make mothers of newborns aware of how best to care for their babies.
On joining the initiative, Beximco Pharma’s Managing Director Nazmul Hassan said “Beximco Pharma has always been committed to providing better solutions to treat diseases through its wide range of medicines at a much affordable price.”
