Bangladesh to reach top position in fish farming by 2022, FAO predicts

SANGSAD BHABAN: Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations forecast that Bangladesh would be the top among other four fish farming countries in the world by achieving success in fish farming by 2022.

“According to the FAO prediction, Bangladesh would be the first for achieving tremendous success in fish farming among other four fish producing countries in the world by 2022,” said Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Haque replying to a query from treasury bench lawmaker Moazzem Hossen Ratan of Sunamganj-1 here in the Jatiya Sangsad today.

Haque said the present government is implementing different programmes for increasing export earning, alleviating poverty and cutting animal protein deficiency from the fisheries sources.

Even the government has also formulated fisheries resource plan (2009-2021) to fulfill the target of achieving food sufficiency, employment generation and poverty alleviation for achieving prosperous future of the country under the vision 2021, said the minister.

Formulation of action plan is underway for achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs), he added. The department of fisheries is working for increasing production of internal open water, close water and extended tidal water bodies across the country.
