DHAKA: An all round performance came from Bangladesh helped them to record first time victory over Sri Lanka in the T20 format in the Micromax Asia Cup T20 beating them by 23 runs in the 5th match of the tournament held on Sunday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur.
Chasing a winning target of 148 runs set by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka found the chase stiff in the face of tight bowling attacks by the Tigers and finally restricted at 124 for 8 in 20 overs.
Shakib Al Hasan brought the early breakthrough for Bangladesh sending back Thilakathne Dilshan for 12 runs. However Dinesh Chandimal pairing with Shehan Jayasuriya paired a 56-run for the second wicket stand.
Chandimal scored run-ball 37 runs laced with four boundaries before he was removed by Mahmudullah while Jayasuriya added 26 runs off 21 balls hitting two over boundaries and one boundary. There after that Sri Lanka could not recover from that stage losing some quick wickets.
Pacer Al-Amin Hosaain was the most successful bowler for Bangladesh taking three wickets for 34 runs. He was well supported by Shakib Al Hasan who claimed two wickets giving away 21 runs.
Sabbir Rahman of Bangladesh was named the player of the match for his impressive batting performance in the match.
Earlier, Bangladesh, rode on Sabbir Rahaman and Shakib Al Hasan’s brilliant batting display, posted a competitive total of 147 for 7 from their allotted 20 overs, after they decided to bat first.
The Sri Lankan bowlers threatened early inroad on Bangladesh innings removing Mohammad Mithun in the very second ball of the first over while Soumya Sarkar also backed to the pavilion without disturbing the scoreboard in the next over off Nuwan Kulasekera delivery.
Experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (4) one again failed to take the responsibility as he fall victim of run out by Mathews, leaving Bangladesh in deep trouble.
Opener Sabbir Rahaman and ace allrounder Shakib Al Hasan took the responsibility to stop the rot contributing 82 runs important partnership for the fourth wicket stand to take the team to a comfortable position.
Sabbir played a responsible knock of 80 runs off 54 runs laced with 10 boundaries and three over boundaries while Shaiikb supported him with a priceless 32 runs off 34 balls hitting three boundaries, both by Dushmantha Chameera’s delivery.
Later a late surge by Mahmudullah (23r off 12b) helped Bangladesh to set a competitive total in front of Sri Lanka. Mahmudullah cracked two boundaries and a sixer.
Dushmantha Chmeera was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka picking up three wickets for 30 runs.
