Staff Correspondent: The 62nd founding anniversary of the country’s oldest political party, Awami League, is being observed today with a slogan “62 Years of Struggle and Successes”.
The ruling Awami League and its associate bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the anniversary in a befitting manner.
On this day in 1949, Awami Muslim League was floated as a new political party at the historic Rose Garden in the Old City. Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Shamsul Huq were unanimously elected as president and general secretary respectively of the new political party.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Khondoker Mostaque Ahmed were also elected as joint secretaries of the party.
Later in 1953, a year after the historic Language Movement of 1952, the word ‘Muslim’ was dropped from the party and Awami League surfaced as a secular democratic and progressive political party for the mass people.
In its 62-year-long glorious history, Awami League under the farsighted, courageous and bold leadership of the aforesaid national leaders launched all the national movements, including Language Movement of 1952 and War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, and fought successfully against exploitation, disparity, subjugation and violation of fundamental human rights with huge public support.
In 1964, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who eventually became Bangabandhu and later Father of Independent Bangladesh, was elected president of the party while Tajuddin Ahmed general secretary.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four of his close associates, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman, led the War of Liberation successfully and presented the nation an independent sovereignty in 1971 by defeating the Pakistani occupation forces.
Awami League’s programme in observance of the day include hoisting of national and party flags atop party offices across the country and at Bangabandhu Bhaban in the city after dawn, placing of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road-32 at 7-30 am and holding a discussion meeting on the open space at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city at 11 am.
