DHAKA: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said all have been united to work for the party-nominated candidate in Narayanganj City Corporation Dr Selina Hayat Ivy.
His comments came as Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with Ivy, Shamim Osman, MP, and other leaders of Narayanganj district and city units of Awami League at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the PM, here last night.
Talking to reporters after the meeting in front of Ganabhaban, the AL general secretary said the prime minister directed all leaders and workers of Narayanganj Awami League to work unitedly in favour of Ivy.
“And all leaders and workers of the party have promised to work unitedly in favour of Ivy,” he said, reminding the leaders and workers that they must maintain discipline if they belong the party.
Replying to a question that whether you feel any challenge after nominating candidate by BNP, Quader, also Road, Transport and Bridges Minister, said: “We have given the candidate to face this challenge.”
Awami League on November 18 nominated Ivy, the incumbent mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), to contest the mayoral post for the upcoming NCC polls.
The second NCC polls will be held on December 22, the Election Commission said.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed announced the polls schedule at a press conference on November 14.
The last date for submitting nomination papers is November 24, while nomination will be scrutinised on November 26 and 27. However, it can be withdrawn by December 4, according to the schedule.
The maiden NCC election was held on October 30 in 2011.
