Staff Correspondent: Dhaka Abahani Limited twice came back from behind to beat their traditional rival Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited by 3-2 goals in a tie-breaker in the final of the Grameenphone Super Cup Football Champion-ship at Bangabandhu National Stadium Saturday.
Both the teams were locked 2-2 at the end of the regulation time, even the extra 30 minutes could not separate both the sides. Abahani after 1990 defeated their rival Mohammedan in any final to lift the trophy. Besides they also earned cash award of Taka one crore while Dhaka Mohammedans had to remain satisfied with Taka 2 million (20 lakhs) and runners-up trophy.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith distributed the prizes as the chief guest. State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad ali Sarker and BFF president Kazi Salahuddin were also present on the occasion.
Both the teams took their time to settle down but as expected Mohammedan’s inform striker Sunday Chizoba broke the stalemate through a dazzling header to beat Abahani’s goalkkeper Sohel in the 23rd minute.
Before Abahani could recover from a goal deficit, saw Towhid doubled the margin in the 31st minute.
Shariful was instrumental again in the 31st minute when his attempted cross was fisted into the middle of the box and the ball fell on the feet of unmarked Towhid who made no mistake to tap it home (2-0).
Twum Frank, the Ghanaian forward reduced the margin in the 35th minute after Awudu Ibarhim set him free and Twum hit the back of the net from the middle of the box.
Mohammedans were reduced to ten men when Ghanaian custodian Al Hasan punched Twum Frank in the 40th minute and referee Miron had no option to give marching order to Hasan.
Twum Frank equalized in the 75th minute with a diagonal shot off an Alfaz chip from the middle of the box.
Abahani created pressure in the second-half but failed to score the cherish winner in the second half.
Substitute Mohammedan custodian Titumir who took field in place of Towhid twice pulled off two brilliant save of Twum Frank and Robin in the dying minutes.
The extra 30 minutes saw both the team concentrate on not conceding a goal but in the 110th minute Abahani’s substitute forward Shakhawat Rony missed an easy chance failing to tap the ball into the empty net.
Cletus Blamo, Shakhawat Rony and Lincon scored for Abahani in the penalty shootout while Alfaz and Twum Frank missed. Sunday Chizoba and Bhashani converted for Dhaka Mohammedan while Baybeck, Amani and Nche Francis failed.
