7th March speech inspiration for downtrodden people: Speakers

DHAKA: Civil society members yesterday said the historic 7th March Speech of Bangabandhu would always inspire the downtrodden people in the world to realize their rights.

“Once Bangabandhu’s 7th March speech was our property but now it is a universal one,” Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman told a civic rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan marking the UNESCO recognition to the fiery speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as part of the world’s documentary heritage.

Prime Minister and Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina addressed the rally as the chief guest.

Anisuzzaman called for translating the landmark speech of Bangabandhu into different languages to allow the people all over the world to feel the strength of the address.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Rafiqul Islam and celebrity writer and academic Muhammed Zafar Iqbal addressed the function as the special guests while UNESCO Country Representative in Dhaka Beatrice Kaldun, journalist Golam Sarwar and Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury, wife of martyred intellectual Dr Aleem Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.

Professor Rafiqul Islam urged the new generation to take lessons from the country’s independence movement to make their marks for the nation.

If the dream of Bangabandhu can be materialized, it will be the perfect honor to his 7th March speech, he added.

Zafar Iqbal said Bangabandhu in his landmark speech ordered the people of the nation to “Use whatever you can put your hands on to confront the enemy”.

“To translate the dream of Bangabandhu into reality, we will have to again resist the anti-liberation forces under the leadership of his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

The academician said: “We could not save the life of Bangabandhu. It is fateful chapter of the nation. If we can materialize his dreams, our grief will be lessened to a little extent.”

Golam Sarwar said Awami League will have to voted to power again to keep continue the flow of development activities.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on October 30, 2017 announced inclusion of Bangabandhu’s historic March 7 speech in the Memory of the World International Register.
