49.64 lakh tonnes of vegetables produced in FY17: BBS

DHAKA: Country witnessed a record production of over 49.64 lakh tonnes of vegetables in the last fiscal year (FY17), up by three lakh tonnes from previous fiscal year (FY16), according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The total production of vegetables was 36.66 tonnes in FY16.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal revealed the figures at a press conference held at National Economic Council (NEC) conference room in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar yesterday.

Replying to a question on the soaring prices of vegetables, Kamal said unfavorable weather affects the supply of vegetables. Besides, transport cost is also high, he said and added that there is also a tendency of making high profits by traders. Once up prices of goods do not come down, he added.

Kamal said Germany, Malaysia and Austria will invest $9.2 billion in different development projects in Bangladesh.

Germany will invest $8 billion in power sector while Malaysia and Austria $1.2 billion in the city’s Jhilimili project, said the minister.

The government will create a business-friendly environment to attract the foreign investors, he said.

He said rural people will not have to come to cities for jobs because the government has taken different job-generating projects in rural area across the country. The government is establishing 100 economic zones in rural areas where thousands of youths will get jobs, he added.

Planning division secretary Ziaul Islam, BBS secretary KM Mozammel Hoq, planning commission member (secretary) Juena Aziz and IMED secretary Mofizul Islam were present at the press briefing.
