3 ex-IGPs surrender in Aug 21 case

Staff Correspondent: The August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally aimed at killing the frontline leaders of the party, including its chief Sheikh Hasina, was the brainchild of Hawa Bhaban, widely believed as the alternative powerhouse of the then BNP government.

“Some of the top BNP leaders, particularly Tarique Rahman, senior vice-chairman of the party and eldest son of Khaleda Zia, and Harris Chowdhury, political secretary of the former premier, designed the plot, said Abdullah Abu, public prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Talking to daily sun at his office on Sunday, he said, “It is crystal clear that the Hawa Bhaban was behind the grenade attack on AL rally as Tarique Rahman and Harris Chowdhury were made accused in the supplementary charge sheets in the cases.”

Islamic militants carried out the grenade attack at the directive of the bhaban, he alleged.

“Collaborators of the anti-liberation forces wanted to kill the two daughters of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman—Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana—in a bid complete their mission,” he added.

At least 24 people, including the then women affairs secretary of AL Ivy Rahman, were killed and 200 others injured in the grenade attack.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), assigned to conduct fresh investigation into the August 21 grenade attack, had finally submitted the supplementary charge sheets on Sunday in the cases–one for murder and other under explosive act—against 30 more people, including Tarique and Harris.

A number of police and intelligence officials had tried to save the culprits involved in the grenade attack by destroying the evidence of the incident and diverted the probe to another direction.

Some former and incumbent police officials, including former Inspectors General of Police Md Ashraful Huda, Shahidul Haque and Khoda Box Chowdhury, former deputy commissioner (east) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Obaidur Rahman, former DC (south) Khan Sayed Hasan and three former investigation officers in the case and ex- CID officials ASP Abdur Rashid, ASP Munshi Atiqur Rahman and special police super Md Ruhul Amin were also implicated in the charge sheet because of their gross negligence in performing professional duties before, during and after the carnage.

Meanwhile, the CID will soon place charge sheet in connection with a case filed against three former investigation officers in the August 21 grenade attack case and ex-CID officials ASP Abdur Rashid, ASP Munshi Atiqur Rahman and special police super Md Ruhul Amin on charge of diverting the grenade attack probe to another direction and destroying the evidence.
