DHAKA: The second span of the Padma Multi-Purpose Bridge would be installed today as work to this end began at the Jajira point in Shariatpur yesterday.
“The Padma Bridge is going to be a reality as the government successfully has set up the first span and installation of the 2nd span would be completed today,” an engineer of the bridge at the construction site told BSS.
The 3,600-ton span, he said, would be placed between pear-38 and pear-39, adding that this is the second among the 41 spans to be installed in the 6.15-km bridge.
The installation work of the second span suspended today due to lack of visibility in the might river Padma, but today morning it will be put on the pear, the engineer added.
Earlier, the first span of the bridge was installed on September 30 last year. The construction work of the long-cherished Padma Bridge started in December, 2015.
The bridge, which will connect the country’s southern region to the capital, will hugely boost communications and trade and economic activities.
The government is constructing the bridge with its own fund as lending agencies cancelled loans over a graft allegation.
